Graffiti

For a long time, I have been interested in photographing the ‘unpicturesque’, such as washing lines, numbers on road signs, tyre marks. I also like graffiti - ducking into back alleys to photograph stuff that property owners and the authorities probably wish weren’t there.

Graffiti varies from simple tags to vast, exuberant creations, but I like the idea – true or not - of people with spray cans and ideas coming at night to create their subversive images.

As a passer-by, though, I can only guess at the meanings of the images, because mostly I don’t know the particular political and social context. So my photographs can only document random moments in time before the image is sprayed over by the next guy or expunged altogether.
